ND5 XS 2
Naim Network Player ND5 XS 2.
The ND5 XS 2 uses innovative new streaming platform with an expanded feature set. High-res UPnP™ streaming, AirPlay, AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in, Bluetooth (apt X HD), Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, Roon compatibility, internet radio and multiroom streaming – alongside digital and USB inputs for conventional connections – make this versatile player the ideal partner for one of integrated amplifiers.
Carefully selected and matched parts, an oversized toroidal transformer, decoupled PCB boards: the ND5 XS 2 benefits from classic Naim engineering and fastidious attention to detail to ensure that it delivers natural, engaging sound quality from all sources.
Features
The streaming section of the ND5 XS 2 uses the latest Naim network card featuring low-noise, high-speed low-voltage differential signalling (LVDS) to route the digital audio signal. The higher speed is capable of decoding all HD audio formats at up to 32 bits/384 kHz or DSD128. Rather than the source acting as the digital timing master, new streaming board turns things around and allows DAC clock to control the flow of audio data. The data is integer-over-sampled in a SHARC DSP to an incredible 40-bit accuracy before it’s fed to the PCM1791A Burr-Brown digital-toanalogue converter.
Developing a new streaming platform was one of the biggest projects we have ever taken on. Naim engineers across all disciplines – electronic, industrial, acoustic and mechanical – worked for three years to create a system that could make the most of online services such as TIDAL and Spotify while adding future-proof flexibility through Chromecast built-in. Supporting faster data rates with dual-band Wi-Fi and the latest 802.11ac protocol, this robust platform was designed for the highest performance on every level.

The device itself is a big plus

Review
At first there were doubts about the acquisition of this apparatus, TC. He does not have a beautiful color display and essentially do not provide functionality for managing tracks on external HDD (i.e. HDD can be connected, but you can not choose a whole album or put tracks in the queue or form a playlist. The device is sharpened for use with NAS). As a result, he sacrificed functionality and brilliance in the name of sound. And not in vain, because. With a closer acquaintance, even more functionality was revealed than expected. For example, Streamer supports the media server media mode, which provides flexible functionality when working with external HDD (in this mode it is possible to create lists, put albums in line and choose more than one track). On other devices, the server is also available (for example, in such applications on iOS as: Mconnect or Foobar2000). The only thing that I did not like was the structure of the tags that is sewn in the application: it cannot be controlled and there is no mode of viewing folders.
What is friends with Tidal, Roon, acts as Renderer (with the same Mconnect you can run music on it), reads all the formats and clearly from the description. Also, from the application you can control the volume on the native amplifier (it is necessary to connect the devices with the Jack Jack cord and activate the necessary settings in the "Automation" section. In case of incorrect operation, in the same section, try different control options). From the wishes I would like to be controlled by the volume from the blocked screen of the mobile device (after all, the device does not have its own remote control and all controls are carried out through the application).
In general, the application is very functional: it remains from the scene of the last visit, Russified, there is a search and such sections as “Favorites” that are integrated with all the application blocks (i.e., there may be tracks/albums/performers from TIDAL, NAS in one list, radio and so on or search are carried out immediately by TIDAL and local media server)
About the sound of the apparatus, it is difficult to judge in isolation from switching, because Depending on the manufacturer and the lines of the wires, it is different and there are a lot of it, you will have to determine at what level you need to stop.

An excellent network player from a well -known manufacturer. Gathering in England, no China. The quality of execution at the highest level. Reads any formats over the network. It is possible to connect a large large volume disc on the rear panel. Management through the NAIM branded application. It is quite simple and intuitive. The sound of this player is a separate theme for conversation. The quality is amazing. Perfectly conveys all the nuances of the record. The sound is very even, without any balanced distortions. He compared it with the Denon 800 network player, of course to compare such devices funny - the price varies approximately 5-6 times. But when you turn on the Naim ND5 XS 2, you understand how much the source is played in the system.
Of the minuses: unless the price of the device.
